Pies, Pastries and Desert Desserts

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

Up for a day trip to a surprising location under two hours from Albuquerque?

Pies have been a specialty at The Ancient Way Café for well over a decade now. Redwulf, our chief pie maker and pastry chef has been baking the pies here for at least a dozen years. And baking does have its challenges at 7300’ elevation.

“You have to add a little more water, because the baking times are longer,” he once told me.

“Water boils here at 180 degrees,” he added.

Once one of the main chefs, creating some of the amazing Friday and Saturday night dinners, Redwulf focuses all of his time on baking now. And the reviews are in—his desserts are well loved.

Green Chile / Pinion Apple is perhaps the Café’s signature pie, but that is only one of the offerings. Seasonal peach, apricot, and berry pies are often on the menu too. And cakes, scones, cookies, strudel, brownies, cinnamon buns, tarts, and other desserts regularly land on the white board. Pre-pandemic, you could often see 20 or more desserts listed. But because of a reduction in visitors, pie baking is scaled back, though pie will always remain a staple at the Cafe. (In person seating is outdoors on the porch). But that doesn’t prevent someone from ordering one of their favorites to go. Those orders take a few days to complete.

The Ancient Way Café is about a 1:45 minute drive from the west side of ABQ and no doubt worth the time spent. Like to make a trip out of it? Make reservations to stay over in one of our Cabins, and spend a little time getting to know this uniquely amazing area. Two art galleries, a coffee shop, trading post, holistic food store and other venues make El Morro New Mexico worth look, and most are within walking distance of the café. Come see for yourself. The Old School Gallery has regular art showings and other noteworthy events. And we’re all just two miles from the National Monument, within view of Oso Ridge, and nearby Los Gigantes. The Wolf Sanctuary is just down the road in Candy Kitchen.

If traveling a distance to visit, please call to inquire about the availability of desserts on the day of your planned visit.

We operate in accordance with all the pandemic guidelines set by the state. Masks are required when not eating and our staff makes a great effort to keep all surfaces clean and disinfected. We are open Thursday through Sunday, 9 - 5.

Your pie is waiting.
